Spoiler Alert!

That a stamp is in the story gives away part of the solution!

This list also includes a number of titles I'm unfamiliar with but were considered by contributors to this list to be "philatelic".

Charade [Video] Comedy/Thriller based on the story The Unsuspecting Wife by Marc Behm and Peter Stone. [1963] Buy video from Amazon  Approx $6.99 to $16.99 depending on format

From The Editor: Starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn with unforgettable music by Henry Mancini. Finding her home turned upside down and her husband dead, Reggie, played by Audrey Hepburn, is drawn into a web of intrigue, love, and silliness surrounding the hotly pursued whereabouts of her 'dead' husband's stolen loot.

The philatelic element makes its subtle appearance at the very start of the movie with a charming offer by Reggie to give her nephew the stamps [& the envelope] from a letter. Collectors will cringe at the abuse this cover subsequently gets, tossed in and out of a vinyl flight bag along with keys and other sharp objects. However, you will absolutely love the end, the genuine respect and affection of the dealer who holds treasure but briefly in his own hands: three rare stamps. The movie is also worth watching for the scenes of the 1960s Parisian Stamp Bourse. Sharp eyes will notice that the Ticket Collector at the Paris Metro is reading a Penquin version of Robert Grave's The Penny Puce.

Fair Tomorrow, by Emily Loring. [Reprinted by Amereon Ltd 1960] Buy Hardcover book from Amazon  Approx $21.95
Emily Loring is a very popular writer with many fans. Reader Gary Shaw writes to tell us this book was first published in 1931. From the the book jacket:"With her family's fortune ruined and her father's health broken, lovely Pamela Leigh gave up a promising career as a newspaper reporter to take her father to the Cape Cod cottage she had recently inherited. There she could manage a restaurant and make ends meet. Just as her future looked darkest, two charming men entered her life. Scott Mallory, the handsome, internationally-famous lawyer, offered to act as her legal adviosr. And dashing Philip Carr helped her keep her finances limping along, with his ingenious architectural plans. Slowly, graitude began to give way to love... Then disaster struck. Only after a harrowing courtroom drama, and the revelations that ensued, could Pam truly understand her feelings for Scott and Philip, and know which man would share her future..."

Grave Mistake, by Ngaio Marsh. (Out-of-Print)

Synopsis from Amazon: "The death of wealthy hypochondriac Sybil Foster at fashionable Greengages is looked into by Superintendent Roderick Alleyn and Sybil's friend, Verity Preston, both of whom are puzzled by the absence of motives and suspects."
One of my favorite authors hits all the 'classic' mystery stops in this story. Set in the quiet English village of Quintern, Mardling Manor is the scene of skull duggery, or in this case, hidden treasure duggery. The story is replete with wealthy hypochondriacs, crank doctors, "Scottish soldier-gardener with a heart of gold", even a map with a spot marked X. From the book:

"...the circumspection of the man of affairs and the avid, dotty desire of the collector were strangely combined in Mr. Markos."

To say more tells too much. If you prefer modern "police procedurals" or gritty crime, give this book a pass. Otherwise, grab a cup of cocoa or if it's summer, a tall lemonade or Pink Gin and cozy up to some fine entertainment. Ngaio Marsh fans will enjoy the Ngaio Marsh Society website.
