20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea

The stamp is from a set issued by the Republic of Guinea in 1978 (Scott 769-773) honoring the 150th anniversary of the writer's birth.

Written in 1870, the "scientific romance", as it came to be called, showed Verne's uncanny knack for predicting 20th century technological advances, in this case a submarine that runs on a limitless supply of energy.

Novels such as this set the stage for science fiction to come.
