Q: What do Dorothy Sayers and Harriet Vane share in common?

Lord Peter Wimsey

Answer: The fact that Wimsey proposes to his sweetheart in Latin (in Gaudy Night) acknowledges their shared intellect as well as love.

The fact that Harriet is a fellow Oxonian is an important "equalizer" in Lord Peter and Harriet's relationship. Sayers herself was one of the first women graduates of the college and a distinguished classical scholar. Her essays on Dante's Divine Comedy are considered to be among the most illuminating ever written on the subject.
