Arthur Conan Doyle breathed life into the eccentric and cerebral detective in the 1887 novel, "A Study in Scarlet," first published in Beeton's Magazine.
Holmes's accomplice and narrator, Doctor Watson is introduced in this novel too, the first of four novels and 56 short stories, in which the redoubtable duo would combine their talents to defeat an intriguing collection of villains, including Holmes's nemesis, Dr. Moriarity.
The use of the magnifying glass is a nifty design touch in this set of stamps, and a propos for Sherlock since Doyle introduced this classic sleuthing tool in "Scarlet."
