Woven from kapok, this sash or obi on Scott 120 holds in the folds of a Japanese lady’s kimono.
Located some 500 miles south of the Japanese mainland, the Ryukyu Islands chain fell under American administration after the battle for Okinawa in 1945. Postage stamps were issued by the US from 1945 until the islands were returned to Japan in 1972. The Ryukyu issues closely resemble Japanese stamps and reflect Okinawa culture and heritage.
