1. topical stamp-whys from China

We travel back to 1200 BC China and the Shang dynasty to identify this object as:

a) a wooden washboard
b) a leather buckle
c) a slate seal or chop
d) a stone musical chime

answer

This is, admittedly, a toughie. About the only indication of the artifact's true purpose is a little hole appearing in the ear of the mythical beast. The stone was hung with others as an ancient wind chime, so if you answered d) a stone musical chime,  you may now burst into song.

This 1954 stamp from the People's Republic (Scott 226) was part of the "Great Mother Country" series, one of the few issued to celebrate China's cultural heritage during the thirty year rule of The Great Helmsman, Mao Zedong.
