Karl Ragnarok

Karl Ragnarok

I told her it was dangerous for a wealthy girl to deceive herself.

Especially about that brother of hers, Gregor! He had become permanently affixed to her, a leech, if you'll pardon the pun, who wouldn't let go. Besides his practice was failing- I mean who would want to go under the knife of a surgeon who was drunk half the time?

My relationship with Eva- Why, yes it's true, things had cooled between us. We had become like two frosty moons circling distant planets. It had not always been so...

I can remember when she first came out to the observatory. I showed her M56 galaxy through the cyclopean eye. M56 was my first discovery and the one that led me to formulate the galactic implosion theory. In brief, the theory posits that all the galaxies will collapse at pre-determined times, like a line of dominos. The universe comes to an end, planets and comets crashing into their stars, very dramatic. I remember how struck she was by the bold genius of the concept. I would spend hours telling her about how it was all coming to an end. Nothing quite like it in all of teleology, I can assure you.

Then our little universe came to an end. You could say I discovered a third moon circling the planet.

This note she left behind? I can't make anything of it. What's new? Eva was always seeing somebody new. And I wasn't in town the night of the 13th. Sure, the police checked my story.

And even if Ragnarok knew who Darling was, would he have told me?

Ivan Posener, on the other hand, was inclined to smile, inclined to talk, even while he slapped black paint on a canvas. That was all, just black paint.
