All right, I can understand
you have your sources, so you need not tell me how you got that letter.
It confirms what I've suspected. One of them did
it. They were all insanely jealous of her and capable- oh my, yes, quite
capable. Especially if a rival had come on the scene...
Why, I last spoke with her a few days before her...
before her death. We had drinks together at the Grand. She was very up about
things, laughing, wise-cracking, just like the old Eva everybody loved.
She was simply bursting with good news, and not only about the new commission
for a mural on the university campus. There were sly hints about someone
new, her "Darling," she called him. That's "Darling"
in the letter, I guess. Not possessive like "the other one." Whoever
that was. She was always such a tease.
She had made a clean break with that pompous ass
Ragnarok months ago. He had become an insufferable weight, I think that
was how she put it. I mean, what was to recommend him? He's a stargazer
by trade and his theories about entropy, and dying planets and all, well
if they don't bore one, they depress one. Eva could only be happy with someone
who shared her passion for art.
Ivan Posener fits that description. But he also
fits the description of a creepy dabbler who thinks paint was invented for
his brush alone! I nearly did handstands when she gave him the bump last
year. Problem is, a man with that degree of arrogance doesn't take rejection
lightly. He lurked at the fringes, nursing his wounds and his obsession
for Eva. |
